‘The Last of Us’, a Naughty Dog game released in 2013, received its first adaptation for the small screen this year through a series for HBO. The plot, as in the game, features Ellie and Joel’s journey to leave the military quarantine zone after the discovery that the girl is immune to the fungus mutation that almost destroyed humanity.
Even so, for the story to be presented on tv and streaming, it was necessary for the plot to undergo some modifications. For this reason, there are several references to the game placed by the creators Craig Mazin It is Neil Druckmann in moments when the actions of the characters cannot be identical to those of the game — or when they want to get some proud smiles from the old fans.
Thinking about these situations, we have listed below 5 ester eggs that you must check before following the fifth episode of the series that will be released this Friday, 10. Check it out!
Joel’s favorite movie
In the first episode of the series, Sarah goes to her neighbors’ house and borrows a DVD to watch with her father that night. The film is “Curtis and Viper 2″, the same feature film that Ellie mentions to Dina in ‘The Last of Us Part II’. Ellie says that she will follow the fictional plot with Joel before going to sleep and that this is one of the “films 80s action movies” that he likes.
The first person camera in the car

At the beginning of ‘The Last of Us’ players control Sarah, the protagonist’s daughter. Referring to this, in the first episode of the HBO adaptation, viewers follow Joel, Tommy and Sarah’s escape from a first-person perspective, as seen by Sarah in the backseat of the car.
Ellie can’t swim

One of the most recurring actions in the game is finding ways to help Ellie cross paths that are covered in water. But unlike the game, in the series, this action gains a verbal justification, since in the second episode of the series, Ellie, Tess and Joel need to cross the hotel lobby, which is flooded with water, and at that same moment, Ellie admits that she cannot can swim.
Gas mask

Unlike the game, in the series there are no spores, the small structures that proliferate in dark and closed spaces, waiting for a human to inhale them and be contaminated, which even makes the characters wear masks to avoid infections.
However, an allusion to the spores is made in the third episode when Bill appears wearing a gas mask to protect himself from possible infections.
Joel and Ellie’s clothes

When Joel and Ellie finally arrive at Bill and Frank’s residence, the duo ends up changing their look as they shower and put on new clothes to continue their journey to the western United States. The sequence references the characters’ attire in the game: Joel’s green plaid shirt and Ellie’s red shirt with blue sleeves.
