5 Disney villains who were inspired by real people

From appearance to voice, these villains carry hallmarks of Hollywood stars.

Far beyond the stories that are inserted, several animated characters draw even more attention because they have physical similarities, wear striking clothes and makeup or even have iconic mannerisms that resemble those of people who exist in the real world.

But, what many may not know, is that some of the most evil figures of Disney animations actually had their characteristics inspired by stars that were present in Hollywood. Thinking about it, RECREIO separated below 5 Disney villains who were inspired by great celebrities.

1. Lady Tremaine

Introduced in ‘Cinderella’ (1950), Lady Tremaine is the young princess’s evil stepmother, who keeps her trapped indoors and forces her to do all the housework and fulfill her and her biological daughters’ every wish.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the character had her appearance and intimidating posture inspired by the actress and voice actress. Elenor Audleywho was also responsible for voicing the villain.


2. Captain Hook

The great villain of ‘Peter Pan’ (1953), Captain Hook was based on his creation by combining the images of two of those responsible for his portrayal in the film.

That’s because, according to Screenrant, the character’s voice actor, Hans Corried, was used as a reference during the film’s early animation stages. In addition, the pirate also looks like frank thomasthe animator who designed it.


3. Maleficent

The great sorceress of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ (1959) was inspired by one of the stars already mentioned in this list: Elenor Audley.

The actress, who is one of Disney’s icons, not only dubbed the character but also had her facial expressions used so that the villain gained even more personality, since the cold looks and devilish smile were only possible thanks to Audleyas revealed by The Atlantic.


4. Cruella De Vil

The rich and narcissistic Cruella De Vil dreams of having a Dalmatian fur coat and is willing to do anything to have it, as the public can follow in ‘101 Dalmatians’ (1961).

However, the appearance of the villain could be a little different if the animators had not recreated the arched eyebrows and facial expressions of the actress. Tallulah Bankheadwhich in addition to all this, still had its smoking style replicated by the character.

Time magazine (via Screenrant) even reveals that the creators of the plot took into account the notorious reckless driving style of bankhead for the creation of the evil character.


5. Ursula

In ‘The Little Mermaid’ (1989), Ursula is the sea witch that Ariel seeks in order to become human. The skilled and manipulative sorceress had her hair, makeup and styling inspired by drag queen Divine. Harris Glenn Milsteadthe actor behind Divine, was even considered to voice the villain, but before he had the chance, he ended up passing away.
