Throughout life, dogs can present different types of health problems. Some diseases, however, are more common or affect only females. According to veterinarian Kelly Moura, mammary, uterine and urinary infections usually affect female dogs more.
“In the case of breast infection, the main reason is the decrease in the mother’s defenses after childbirth, that is, she is vulnerable to infectious organisms. In addition, this vulnerability can also be a consequence of psychological pregnancy”, explains veterinarian Andréia Massuia.
According to Kelly Moura, the cause of uterine infection is the same as that of breast cancer and psychological pregnancy, that is, a hormonal disorder. She clarifies that this disease usually affects bitches from the age of five. Regarding urine infection, the veterinarian comments that the main reasons are low water intake, urinary retention, an unbalanced diet, sedentary lifestyle and natural aging.
Symptoms of these diseases
It is important that the tutor keeps an eye on the symptoms in order to identify the disease and start treatment as soon as possible. According to Andréia Massuia, the signs of a breast infection are diarrhoea, apathy, malaise, hardening and secretion in the breasts and refusal to nurse the puppies.
Regarding uterine infection, she comments that the main signs are lack of appetite, weakness, vomiting, fever, presence of vaginal and mammary secretions, increased water consumption and excessive peeing. “Urinary infection, in turn, has symptoms such as difficulty urinating, urine with an abnormal color (with the presence of blood in some cases), fever and lack of appetite”, says Andréia Massuia.
treatment options
Despite being common, these three diseases can be treated, which guarantees the female well-being and health. In the case of breast infection, care is based on making water compresses to relieve pain and reduce swelling. In severe cases, the most indicated surgery is to drain the mammary glands.
To the infection uterus, Kelly Moura explains that the treatment is the castration surgery itself, which will remove the uterus and ovaries from the bitch. After the surgical process, if the infection is active, it will be necessary to use antibiotics. Urinary tract infection, in turn, according to the veterinarian, is treated by administering anti-inflammatories and antibiotics.
form of prevention
According to Kelly Moura, both breast and uterine infections are prevented through the castration process. The only exception is the disorder urinary, which can occur regardless of whether the pet is neutered or not. “The prevention of urine infection is done through hygiene habits, dietary changes and incentives to drink water”, he concludes.
