5 differences between the Disney movie and the original tale

‘The Princess and the Frog’ is inspired by a short story of the same name written by ED Baker

Released in 2009, Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” accompanies Tiana, a dreamy and hard-working girl who aims to open her own restaurant, but in the middle of the way, ends up turning into a frog when trying to help a prince. who suffered a curse, causing her to live several adventures before finally becoming part of royalty and getting where she really wants to be.

The animated plot is an adaptation of the children’s story ‘The Frog Princess’, a book written by ED Baker which was published in 2002 and which is inspired by an even older work, as the original narrative appeared in the mid-1800s as a fairy tale of the brothers grimm titled ‘The Frog Prince’.

As it is an adapted film, some details about the characters, the twists and turns and other events that make the story unfold end up being modified to better fit with the new cast. With that in mind, we’ve separated below 5 differences between the Disney feature film and the original tale.

1. BREAKING THE SPELL

in the story of ED Baker the spell is broken when the princess kisses the frog, while in the Disney film, the same thing happens, but only after the couple’s second kiss, since in the first attempt, Tiana was just an ordinary girl, causing her to also transform in the small amphibian.

Thus, at the end of the animation, when still frogs, Tiana and Prince Naveen get married, the kiss that seals the marriage makes her become a princess and break the curse, since only a princess’s kiss could do it .

It is also worth comparing with the Tale of the brothers grimm, since in this one, the spell is undone in another way. After the princess loses a golden ball in a well, she sees the chance to recover the object with a frog prince who found it, as he promises to return it if the heir to the throne takes him to the palace and becomes her friend. .

She accepts the deal, but soon breaks it. However, that doesn’t make the frog give up and he follows her to the big castle. Upon realizing, she gets angry and throws him against the wall, but the brutal feat makes her regret hard and, because of that feeling, the curse involving the prince is broken.

2. THE PRINCESS

Both in the short story and in the children’s story, the character named Tiana in Disney’s animation already appears on the pages as a princess, unlike the feature film Casa do Mickey, where the waitress who dreams of one day opening her own restaurant With a menu full of her late father’s recipes, she only becomes a princess after marrying Prince Naveen.

3. APPLICANTS

The stories also show a difference when presenting suitors. That’s because, in ‘The Frog Princess’, Princess Emma discovers love with Prince Eadric of Upper Montevista, but she is engaged to Prince Jorge, an arrogant man from a neighboring kingdom whom she tries to avoid at all costs.

Already in animation, Tiana has no intentions. Here, who has her heart disputed is her friend Charlotte “Lottie” who wants to marry a prince and who had Naveen as one of her suitors.

4. THE KINGDOM

Disney’s plot is set in New Orleans in the 1920s, while the stories of the Brothers Grimm and ED Baker have a fictional kingdom as a backdrop that has no defined period of time, but which can be considered, since on account of from the description of what the court is like and the presence of dragons, it is possible that it is set in the medieval era.

5. FAIRY GODMOTHER

On the pages, the enchanted story features Mundine, the lovely witch who is Princess Emma’s aunt and responsible for helping the young woman and Prince Eadric break the spell that turned them into frogs.

On the big screen, Mama Odie takes Mudine’s place, as the 197-year-old voodoo priestess has a similar role, but is not related to Tiana.
