In terms of investment in Iran’s economy, Russia has surpassed China, Iran’s Deputy Economy and Finance Minister Ali Fekri said.
In 2022, Russia will become the largest investor in Iran, surpassing China in this indicator, Bloomberg reported on Sunday, January 29, citing the Iranian newspaper Donya-e Eqtesad. Since August 2021, Russia has invested $2.7 billion in two oil projects in the western Iranian province of Ilam, Ali Fekri, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, told the publication. According to the deputy minister of Iran, Russian investments were made directly in cash and with the help of foreign currency operators.
At the same time, China, which has large financial resources, last year reduced its investments in Iran, confining itself to the construction of logistics centers and border facilities related to Chinese exports. Other major investors in Iran’s economy are the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Afghanistan.
Cooperation between Russia and Iran
Russia and Iran lead the world in the amount of international sanctions imposed on them. Since the start of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the two countries have deepened cooperation by signing several agreements in the commercial and military fields. Ukraine and Western countries accuse Iran of supplying Moscow with several thousand Shaheed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which the Russian army uses to attack Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure. Tehran admitted in November that it had sent drones to Russia, but claimed it had done so before the war in Ukraine began.
In turn, Western intelligence sources reported that Russia will provide Iran with 24 Su-35 fighters, originally intended for Egypt, as well as air defense systems.
At the same time, Tehran does not recognize the annexation of Crimea by Russia, as well as the territories of Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions of Ukraine, the Iranian Foreign Minister said earlier.
It was previously reported that Iran and Russia directly linked their banking systems.
