Jeremy Renner became a true superhero when details of his snowplow accident emerged.
A new report obtained by CNN from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in Nevada confirmed that Renner was saving his adult grandson from being hit when he himself was crushed by the vehicle. The Jan. 1 accident left Renner with more than 30 broken bones.
The Marvel star was using a Pistenbully snowcat to pull his nephew’s truck out of the snow when it started sliding downhill. The report says she jumped out “without applying the emergency brake” and then tried to stop the snowcat from hitting her grandson.
“Once he got out of Pistenbully, he realized he was going straight to (his nephew),” the redacted report said, according to CNN. “He was afraid that Pistenbully would hit him (his nephew) so he decided to try to stop or deflect Pistenbully.”
This proved to be a challenge as the snow cat ran along a path, which Renner decided to climb in an attempt to get into the cabin and regain control. The report said he was “pulled immediately under the left rail” and was “scratched” by the 14,330-pound car.
A 911 call log obtained by CNN said Renner was “completely crushed” when the “right side of his chest” collapsed and his upper torso was “crushed.” The snowcat “rolled over him and continued on his way,” the report said, while Renner “focused on his breathing.”
Renner was eventually airlifted to a regional hospital’s intensive care unit and underwent at least two surgeries. He made his first public statement on January 3 and said he was “too confused right now to write”, but still thanked his fans for their support.
Renner is selfless in helping others out of trouble, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve told the Reno Gazette-Journal. While he was certainly eager to help his nephew after a New Year’s Eve storm brought heavy snow to the area, it seems it could have been anyone.
“Help someone stuck in the snow. He’s always helping others,” Schieve told the local newspaper, adding that Renner helped the community on a regular basis without ever advertising it. “He always calls and says, ‘Hey mayor, what do you need?'”
Renner returned home on January 16 – e he thanked his fans once again.
