Singer David Crosby has died at the age of 81

Singer David Crosby of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash has died aged 81.

“It is with great sadness that, after a long illness, our beloved David (Croz) Crosby has passed away,” his wife, Jan Dance, said in a statement to Variety. “He was surrounded in love by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django. While he is no longer with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us.”

Variety noted that the death came as a surprise to many, as Crosby was an active presence on social media and posted on Twitter. no later than Wednesday.

However, the singer appeared to be aware that his time was running out, hinting at it when he announced his retirement from live shows eight months ago.

“We recorded at an incredible pace. … I’m 80 years old now, so I’m going to die very soon,” she said at the time. “That’s how it works. And that’s how I try to release as much music as possible, as long as it’s really good.”

The son of Oscar-winning cinematographer Floyd Crosby, the singer grew up in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, California. He began his music career during the popular boom of the early 60s.

Crosby made his breakthrough in 1964 as a member of the Byrds, a seminal folk-rock group that scored two major No. 1 hits with “Mr. Tambourine Man” and “Come Back! Return! Return!”

But in addition to having an excellent ear for harmony, Crosby also had an attitude that got him kicked out of the band in 1967.

But he didn’t stay long without the group. He soon approached musicians Stephen Stills and Graham Nash to form Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968. The trio occasionally expanded into a quartet with Neil Young.

Crosby was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of both bands.

In addition, she recorded solo and duet albums with Nash, but later fell out with him, saying in 2021 that her ex-partner “made it seem like he was taking care of me, but it seems like all of them were trying to let it go . Go.” the money is coming”.

Crosby also called Young “probably the most selfish, self-centered, selfish person I know.”

Heavy drug use took a toll on Crosby’s life. In 1982, he was arrested in Texas on drug and weapons charges and spent nine months in prison.

He also received a liver transplant in 1994 after decades of drug and alcohol abuse.

When Crosby wasn’t acting, he sometimes moonlighted as an actor, with appearances on “Roseanne” and “The Simpsons.” In “The John Larroquette Show”, he played an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor for the main character.

He was the biological father of two children born to Julie Cypher, then partner of singer Melissa Etheridge. One of the children, Beckett Cypher, died of drug addiction in 2020 at the age of 21.

Crosby is survived by Dance and their son, Django Crosby, as well as son James Raymond and two daughters, Erika Keller Crosby and Donovan Ann Crosby, from previous relationships.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
