Lola Mitchell, a pioneering rapper and former member of Three 6 Mafia, died on Sunday. He was 43 years old.
Mitchell, also known as Gangsta Boo, recorded her first song with Three 6 Mafia, “Cheefa Da Reefa”, when she was 14 and officially joined the group a year later in 1994. She became an influential member of Memphis rap. scene, recording with artists and rising stars alike after leaving Three 6 Mafia in the early 2000s.
She has worked with iconic rappers including Lil Jon, TI, Killer Mike and Gucci Mane and was featured on a recent track Latto which premiered just a few weeks ago.
“I would honestly say that I have to respectfully and humbly admit that I am the project,” he told Billboard in December. “I hear my beat on a lot of guys and rappers. … I used to run away from her. I didn’t want to give myself flowers because I was so discreet and humble. It’s time to claim what’s mine.”
Three founding members of 6 Mafia, DJ Paul, posted a tribute to Mitchell on Instagram.
The cause of his death is unknown.
