“Regarding titanium, we are in the process of breaking (ties – ed.) with Russia. It’s a matter of months, not years. I can’t give you an exact date, it is a complex process with certification and everything else that is aviation needs, but it will happen,” said Michael Scholhorn, chief executive of Airbus Defense & Space.
According to him, the company buys a certain percentage of Russian titanium, but it is “on the way to become independent from it.”
According to a 2019 report, Airbus used Russian titanium to build the NH90 and Tiger military helicopters. At the same time, Scholhorn noted that the company no longer needs it for military products. And for civil aircraft it takes very little. Airbus is currently looking for alternative suppliers.
Earlier, the media reported that the EU excluded the company VSMPO-Avisma from the “black” list for Russia. It is considered the largest producer of titanium in the world. Overall, Russia supplies up to half of the titanium for the world’s aerospace industry.
