Pizzas, beer, hot peppers… Inflation affects the leading products of the evenings before the World Cup.

Beers, pizzas, sodas… As tradition dictates, these products will be on the French menu before the matches of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar from November 20 to December 18. However, this year will not be like the others: the championship will be held in December. In addition, the time difference will make it difficult for Blues supporters to watch the games and inflation will put a burden on the shopping basket in preparation for the viewings.

Therefore, the French will adapt, panelist NielsenIQ data shows. According to the company, in fact, almost one in five French people do not plan to watch the event on television due to environmental or social issues such as the working conditions of stadium workers, the organization of the World Cup. In addition, the vast majority of French people, 93%, who intend to follow this major sporting event, believe that they watch the matches at home, not in a bar. Then they plan to consume, again according to NielsenIQ, cold non-alcoholic beverages, savory snack products (chips, crackers, etc.), homemade or frozen pizzas, or even beer.

However, even watching from home, the French should expect to pay more for the staples of football nights. Indeed, according to a recent study by Tiendeo, a platform specializing in digital offers and catalogs, conducted on data collected from September 2021 to October 2022, the price of chips increased by 15.7% in one year. The same for frozen pizzas, with an 8 percent increase. In beverages, Coca-Cola is up 6.6%. The same trend in the case of beer, the price of which has increased by 4.5%.

A trend that is confirmed by accurate data from INSEE, as well as by an IRI expert who notes an even slightly more noticeable increase in these products. For chips, the increase is explained by the explosion in the price of sunflower oil, one of the raw materials for these products, which is linked in particular to the war in Ukraine, since the country accounts for 50% of the world’s sunflower oil exports. The same observation applies to pizza, so the price has increased due to the increase in the price of wheat needed to make the dough. However, Russia and Ukraine represent 30% of global exports, producing 75 million and 33 million tons of wheat each year, respectively. “Added to this are the rising costs of packaging and energy-intensive refrigeration.says IRI’s FMCG expert Emily Mayer.

In turn, Coca-Cola and other sodas are suffering from rising prices for the plastic and aluminum used in their packaging. The same is the case with beer, in case of an increase in the price of a glass.

To have a good time without spoiling themselves, the French are therefore looking for solutions. “Increasingly price-sensitive consumers are looking for the best promotions to minimize the impact on their walletssays Henri-Noël Bouvet, France Manager of ShopFully, owner of the Tiendeo marketplace. Football fans don’t want to sacrifice their TV to watch matches.
