Employment: how is the labor market in metropolitan Lima?

According to the latest report from the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI), over the past three months, about 4 million 994 thousand Peruvians have had a job in the capital Lima.

Now they are 5.9% more workers than in August, September and October 2021, but not all Peruvians are in an ideal working situation.

Out of every 100 people of working age, 93 have a job and 7 are looking for it.


Of the total number of employees in the capital, 54.2% are men and 45.8% are women.

Half of the workforce in Lima is between the ages of 25 and 44, although the number of workers in this category is still below pre-pandemic levels.

Similarly, 15.7% of the employed population is under 24 and 34% over 45.

On average, the majority of workers (43.7%) have only a maximum secondary education. 28.7% have completed higher education, 20.7% have technical education and only 6.9% have received only primary education.


Of the 93 employed alone, about 55 are in sufficient employment with social benefits and above the minimum income, and 38 are employed part-time.

Underemployment means that they do not work the proper number of hours and have salary less than the statutory minimum of S$1,025.

Only in the case of underemployment on income, INEI indicates that in Lima one million 472 thousand 600 workers earn less than the minimum wage. This figure is slightly down from what was recorded in 2021, but still 38.9% higher than what was recorded before the pandemic.

During the last three months, most of them workers They worked in the service industry, where 700,000 employees did not receive even the minimum for their work.

On the other hand, suitable employment increased by 32.1% (222,200) among the self-employed and by 14.3% (254,900) among dependents.

ERI It also indicates that the median income of workers in Lima has already exceeded pre-pandemic levels.

The average remuneration in the capital is SGD 1,770.2 per month, up 10.6% from last year and 0.5% up from what was recorded in 2019.

Unemployment

Over the past three months, it has been reported that a total of 385,500 people are wanted. Work in Lima.

If we compare the unemployment in these months with the unemployment registered for the same period in 2021, it becomes clear that it has decreased by 2.4% and 9.2%, respectively.

In addition, INEI notes that more than five out of 10 unemployed are women, and only four are men.
