The European Commission proposes to negotiate an extension for another year, but the Ministry of Infrastructure of Ukraine hopes to agree to a longer period.
Ukraine is negotiating with the European Commission on the extension of the Agreement on Freight Transport by Road, known as “transport visa-free”. This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine, Mustafa Nayem, writes European Truth.
“Now we are negotiating the extension of this agreement. The European Commission proposes to negotiate an extension for another year, but we want more – immediately extend it for 5 years. In the worst case, no less than 2-3 years,” he said.
According to Nayem, such a move by the government is seen as getting closer to the signing of a permanent transport visa-free regime, but for now, the ministry has been asked to provide estimates of how the volume of cargo traffic will change in the past year, after which negotiations will begin.
“Here we have a good chance. And if we succeed in agreeing on a visa-free regime for several years, it will give us the opportunity to then talk about signing it without time limits,” Nayem added.
As reported, Ukraine and the EU signed an agreement on the liberalization of road transport with the European Union. The document eliminates the need for Ukrainian carriers to obtain appropriate permits for bilateral and transit transport in EU states.
Recall that within three years Ukraine planned to get five visa-free regimes in the EU. Most of them have been completed. We are talking about agreements in the field of energy, customs, transport, digital market and trade conditions.
