The talks are taking place eight days before the July agreement brokered by the UN and Turkey is due to be renewed.
Moscow has previously said it is prepared to pull out of the deal, which expires on November 19, if progress is not made on its problems. At the same time, Russia suspended its participation in the deal at the end of October after the attack on the fleet in Crimea, but returned a few days later.
UN Representative in Geneva Alessandra Vellucci said UN Aid Chief Martin Griffiths, who is leading Ukrainian export negotiations, and senior UN Trade Representative Rebeca Greenspan are meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin.
“We hope that this discussion should contribute to the progress made in facilitating the smooth export of food and fertilizers from the Russian Federation to world markets,” he said at a briefing.
As you know, Ukraine wants to extend the grain deal. Kyiv offered Turkey and the UN to extend the agreement for at least one year, as well as expand it.
