The country’s refineries buy Russian oil at a discount, which is beneficial for New Delhi.
India will continue to buy Russian oil because it is beneficial for the country. Foreign Minister Subramanyam Jaishankar said this on November 8 after a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, Reuters reports.
It is noted that India has become the largest buyer of Russian oil after China. Its refineries buy Russian fuel at a discount.
The agency recalled that New Delhi, the world’s third largest oil importer and a traditional ally of Moscow, did not directly condemn Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, and on Tuesday took place the fifth meeting of this year between Jaishankar and Lavrov.
“Our primary responsibility is to give the Indian consumer the best possible access to the most favorable terms in the international (oil and gas) markets. In this regard, we see that the relations between India and Russia are beneficial. So if it benefits me, I will continue it,” said the head of the Indian Foreign Ministry.
As Reuters pointed out, the announcement was made a month before the US and its allies from big seven took steps to prevent Russia from profiting from oil by capping prices.
Earlier, the media found out that after the introduction of EU sanctions on the import of Russian coal, Turkey, India and China, as well as African countries, are buying it at a reduced price.
