Dozens of affected Metinvest businesses will seek compensation for damage caused by the Russian invasion.
Rinat Akhmetov’s Metinvest Group has filed a lawsuit at the European Court of Human Rights against Russia for damage to business property since the invasion began.
In total, 16 enterprises filed lawsuits, in particular, Azovstal and Ilyich Iron and Steel Works filed lawsuits against Mariupol steel companies. More than 10 Group companies will file similar claims before the end of the year.
According to the lawsuits, Russia is violating Metinvest Group’s rights under Article 1 of Protocol 1 to the European Convention on Human Rights by causing significant damage and destruction to its assets, depriving the Group of control over its assets, in many cases effectively depriving the Group of ownership of the assets, and depriving the Group of the opportunity to use its assets for commercial purposes and to earn income
In this regard, all affected businesses are demanding compensation from Russia for the damage.
The Group’s statements follow a similar case filed by Metinvest co-owner Rinat Akhmetov at the ECtHR on June 23, 2022. The Metinvest Group supports his claim, taking into account the statements of its businesses as complementary and acting in full coordination with its shareholder when considering cases.
Recall that at the end of June Akhmetov filed a case against Russia at the European Court of Human Rights.
Overall, SCM businesses lost approximately $20 billion in assets due to the Russian invasion.
