The group of companies opposed the initiative of the Association of European Steel Producers to include Russian slabs in the sanctions list.
Representatives of a number of European metallurgical companies opposed the possible imposition of sanctions against Russian metallurgical products, writes Agrus.Media.
The Association of European Steel Producers (EUROFER) approached the European Commission with a proposal to impose sanctions.
The letter to the EC was signed by Marcegaglia, Pittini, Officine Tecnosider, Laminoirs des Landes, Vitkovice Steel, Network Steel, Duferco, Dunaferr and NBH (NLMK Belgium Holdings). The group calls itself a platform for building a competitive EU steel ecosystem.
Rollers say they see no alternative to Russian slabs. It is argued that other manufacturers cannot provide a stable supply.
Today, the largest supplier of Russian slabs in Europe is Vladimir Lisin’s NLMK, which owns NLMK Belgium Holdings (NBH).
In January-July 2022, 2.4 million tons of slabs were sold from Russia to the EU (in the same period in 2021, this quantity was 2.6 million tons).
As you know, in March 2022, Europe banned the import of most types of Russian steel products, but slabs are not included in the list (except those made by companies subject to direct sanctions ).
Meanwhile, EU member states failed to agree on the introduction of a price ceiling for Russian oil.
