The director said that he did not agree that the Film Academy of the Russian Federation refused to nominate the film for an Oscar in 2022.

Russian director and head of the Russian Oscar Committee Pavel Chukhrai has left his post. The reason is that in 2022 the Film Academy of the Russian Federation decided not to propose the film for the most prestigious Oscar award, writes TASS.

The director, who directed the films Driver for Vera and The Thief, said in a letter that the Academy’s decision was “illegal”. According to him, it was adopted unilaterally and “over the head of the Oscar committee.”

“I wish to inform you that as a sign of protest I have resigned from my presidency and resigned from this organization,” Chukhrai wrote in his address.

He noted that he noted that the director Nikolai Dostal, who worked on the films Shtrafbat, the Little Giant of Big Sex, will also leave the committee.

As you know, the last time a film from the Russian Federation was among the Oscar nominees was in 2014. They became Leviathan Andrey Zvyagintsev.

Recall that the Russian director and head of the Union of Cinematographers of the Russian Federation Nikita Mikhalkov proposed at the Eurasian Economic Forum in Bishkek to create an alternative to the American film award Oscar. He expressed the idea of establishing the Eurasian Film Academy.

Ukraine at the Oscars will be represented by the film Klondike
