Ukraine started exporting electricity to the European Union two months ago and plans to increase the volume of supplies.
Ukraine could provide an additional 7.7 GW of energy generation capacity for the European Union, helping Europe free itself from Russian energy blackmail. Maxim Timchenko, CEO of DTEK, spoke about the potential of the Ukrainian energy sector for the EU in a column for Euractiv.
“Ukraine will help Europe achieve proper energy security, free itself from Moscow’s blackmail and political machinations. We can do a lot now, and we can do even more in the near future,” he said.
Thus, further integration of the Ukrainian energy system into ENTSO-E could provide an additional 7.7 GW of Ukrainian energy generating capacity for the EU. And the potential export of 35 TWh of Ukrainian electricity could allow Europe to reduce gas consumption by 6.5 billion cubic meters.
Timchenko noted that Ukraine has the largest gas reserves in Europe after Norway, as well as large underground gas storage facilities near the European Union’s eastern border.
“Ukraine is ready to be a reliable partner, providing capacities and investing more and more in the development and implementation of clean technologies. Our vision is to contribute to the protection of the values of humanity, democracy and security,” the director of DTEK added.
Recall that during the conference in Lugano, a plan was presented for the construction of 30 GW of “green” energy in Ukraine until 2032.
Today, the capacity of Ukrainian “green” energy is 9 GW. DTEK has previously proposed a plan to increase renewable energy to 30 GW by 2030.
