Portage District Commissioners said the Volunteer Council, which oversees the market, has canceled plans for the event. Commissioner Sabrina Christian-Bennett told Ohio-based Record Courier that a council member explained that the area has a “long-term policy” of not hosting political demonstrations.
District Commissioner Tony Badalament, a big supporter of the demonstration, said the reasons were originally all over the map.
“It was their internal regulations that said they would not have political events at the fairs,” he added.
Christian-Bennett told Record-Courier that other trade shows are available but Trump’s team is “fixed” at Portage District headquarters. He said sad market advice in Canfield and Geuga counties also rejected Trump’s team, the newspaper reported.
Badalamenti said he has spoken to Trump’s team several times about the event scheduled for April 24. He estimates the promotion could bring in up to 20,000 people and millions of dollars in revenue and local contractors will any damage can be repaired at a discount.
He said in the paper that the former president’s visit to the market would be an “honor” and “I think it’s awful to pay attention to the Portage district.”
The Fairs Committee could not be immediately reached for comment.
