Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Qatar supplied from 12% to 14% in Europe.

Qatar threatens to stop the supply of natural gas (LNG) supply in EU countries in response to European law on proper care related to forced labor and environmental damage. It was reported by Reuters that there was a reference to the Qatar government’s letter to the Belgium authorities.

Thus, in a letter of May 21, the Katar Minister of Katar Saad Al-Qaabi said the country responds to the EU’s directive on proper protection in the field of corporate stability (CSDDD). This directive requires large companies working in the EU, to identify and solve human rights problems and the environment in their supply chains.

“Simply put, if further changes are not made to the directive, the state of Qatarenergy and the state of Qatarenergy has no other choice, except to seriously take care of the alternative markets outside the EU for our LNG and other products that offer a more stable and interesting business environment,” the letter said.

The Belgian Representative Office’s press secretary under the EU refused to comment on this letter.

Meanwhile, the European Commission’s press secretary confirmed the reception of a letter from Qatar. According to him, now the lawmakers and government of the EU countries are working on the directive.

At the beginning of this year, Brussels has proposed directive changes to reduce the requirements, especially by delaying its launch within one year – to mid -2028 – and limit the checks the company needs to perform in its supply chains.

Companies that do not fulfill the requirements may encounter a fine of up to 5% of the transfer to the world. But Qatar says these changes are not enough.

It is noted that Qatar is the third largest exporter of liquid natural gas (LNG) in the world after the United States and Australia. Since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the country supplied from 12% to 14% in Europe.

Remember, on July 25, gas in the EU fell on price at a three -month minimum. Demand is reduced due to the growth of atomic and solar energy production, as hot and cloudless weather is predicted.
