The European auto giant weighs the future of a single expensive brand against the back of weak sales and internal disagreements.
Remembering Stellantis, who owns brands such as Jeep, Peugeot, Chrysler and Alfa Romeo, is considering the possibility of selling Maserati -his only representative in the luxury segment of the car. This was reported by two resources to Reuters, emphasizing that the final decision has not been made, and the evaluation of the options is at an early stage.
The discussion of the future Maserati began before the appointment of Antonio Filozi’s new CEO, which officially holds a position from Monday. Earlier, the company was led by the board chairman, John Elkann, who, during the search for the new CEO, especially focused on the need to change the advise of maintenance of all the 14 brands of the company.
Maserati sale is just one of the possible situations reviewed by McKinsey of Stellantis Consulting Company. At the same time, the official representative of the car’s concerns refused: “Sincerely, Maserati is not sold.”
Despite this, brand indicators have been concerned in recent years: in 2024, Maserati sales fell more than half – up to 11,300 cars, and operating losses reached € 260 million. In addition, the brand has not planned new models – the presentation of the updated business plan promised after Filozi’s entry into the post.
Within the board of Stellantis directors there is no unity about the additional fate of Maserati. Some believe that the company has no resources for the full brand restart and better sell it. Others are convinced that Maserati still has the potential and that the sale of a single luxury brand will be a blow to the company image.
Among Maserati’s possible buyers, experts call Chinese auto companies, especially Chery, who seek to get a foothold in the European market and need recognized brands.
Stellantis shares have lost two -thirds of their value since March of last year, and some analysts emphasize that the company should focus on major brands to increase profitability.
Remember that Nissan had previously reportedly planned to reduce the part in Renault.
