The demand for an electric SUV is seven times lower than the traditional versions. “People want a real G -class – with six or eight cylinders,” said the brand representative.
Mercedes-Benz faces unexpected low demand for the electrical version of the Cult SUV G-Class. According to the German business publication Handelsblatt, the EQ G 580 model was almost ignored by customers – its sales were significantly caught behind fuel and diesel versions.
According to publication resources, the Mercedes leadership does not hide failures. One of the leading managers, who wanted to remain unidentified, said: “The car is like a lead in dealerships. It’s a complete failure.” The other called Nisheva model and confirmed that the level of sales was very low.
Ever since entering the EQ G 580 market, only 1450 units have been sold, while traditional G -Class sales for the same period have reached nearly 9,700 cars – almost seven times more.
Among the factors that interfere with electric G -Class success is less practical. At almost identical prices with fuel G 500, the EQ G 580 is less than capabilities: its carrying capacity is only 415 kg, and it is impossible to install a cover. The weight of the machine exceeds 3 tons, and the range is limited to 473 km in the WLTP cycle.
The low demand for the EQ G 580 forced Mercedes to reconsider the approach associated with the future decreased version of G-Class, which is expected in 2027. Although it has previously been assumed that it is concentrated electric, now the company is considering the addition of versions with traditional internal combustion engines. Mercedes is currently reviewing the technical and financial aspects of such a step.
Despite the weak start, Mercedes officially said the sales “corresponds to the set goals.” However, not all of the company share this optimism. One of the brand’s representatives was directly admitted: “People want a real G -class – with six or eight cylinders.”
Remember, earlier it was reported that Mitsubishi returned to the electric vehicle market.
Tesla sales in France fell 67%
