Fraud with payment cards last year often occurred through the Internet – up to 93%.
In 2024, the number of card fraud cases decreased, increasing their losses. This was reported by the National Bank of Ukraine’s press service on Monday, May 12.
According to the NBU, the amount of losses from illegal acts and fraudulent operations using payment cards for 2024 increased by 37% to 1.1 billion hryvnias.
This is due to an increase in the average value of an illegal operation of 39% compared to 2023 (from 3065 hryvnias from 2023 to 4247 hryvnias in 2024).
In total, up to 270 thousand illegal operations were recorded in 2024. One million hryvnias spent using payment cards accounted for 176 hryvnias of fraud losses.
Distribution by the volume of losses depending on the scene of the fraudulent operation in 2024 changed: part of the deceptive internet operation – up to 93% increased (in 2023 it was 86%). Accordingly, 7% of the total amount of losses were caused by fraud on physical devices.
The average value of an illegal internet operation last year increased one and a half times (by 51%) and costs 4761 hryvnias (at 2023 – 3150 hryvnias).
In 2024, as usual, most deceptive cases were caused by social engineering. That is, when customers are able to unite the personal data, the details of the payment cards that confirm the codes and passwords for payment transactions.
Last year, 84% of the total amount of all losses were caused by social engineering (in 2023 this figure was 80%).
Earlier it was reported that under Oschadbank guise, attacks were widely sent fake emails with demand to confirm the identity.
