This year, the defense budget has remained almost at the level of last year, but it is impossible to predict many risks, the head of the Ministry of Finance Sergei Marchenko said.
Ukraine’s military expenditure in 2024 became higher than that was given to the state budget. At the same time, the Ministry of Finance ensures that the state has resources to cover additional needs without increasing taxes. It was said by the Minister of Finance Segey Marchenko during the discussion of the Center for Economic Strategy, RBC-Ukraine reported Wednesday, April 16.
“If we are talking about our current budget needs, then yes, it is true that we need to spend an additional part of the existing budget on military goals because of some military conditions. I do not want to dissolve the details or details of why this happened,” Marchenko said.
According to him, the current defense budget remained almost at the level of last year, but a number of risks was impossible to predict.
“We can’t predict all the possible military risks that are now implemented. That’s why our military costs of this quarter and the previous quarter are higher than we planned earlier,” he explained.
Marchenko emphasized that the situation is in control, and the government has the opportunity to cover the costs.
At the same time, the head of the Ministry of Finance suggested that the budget adjustment could occur in the second half of the year, but the exact deadlines were not yet known.
“Right now, I’m not ready to say it will happen in the near future. Perhaps it will happen in the second half of the year. The Ministry of Defense has sufficient resource and preparation to ensure the fulfillment of its operations before that time,” he added.
At the same time, the minister assures that the delay in army payments or funding is not expected.
“I want to repeat that the situation is under control. We do not see any risks associated with non -payment of military costs or other similar problems. Moreover, we are fully capable of covering all military costs. We have enough reserves of income and internal resources to do so without additional taxes,” Marchenko emphasized.
The Ministry of Finance also hopes to cover costs by excessive budget revenue and internal borrowing.
