Gazprom’s statement is likely to escalate tensions between Europe and Russia, the agency warned.
Russian gas monopoly Gazprom has announced force majeure on gas supplies in Europe to at least one major consumer. Reuters reported this in connection with the letter of concern on Monday, July 18th.
Thus, on July 14, Gazprom notified the gas recipient that it would not be able to fulfill its obligations for deliveries due to “exceptional circumstances” allegedly beyond its control. At the same time, the company did not specify what exactly these events were.
According to a Reuters source, we are talking about supplies through the Nord Stream gas pipeline, the main supply route to Germany. The reference to “force majeure” circumstances is used when a company fails to fulfill its obligation for reasons beyond its control.
Gazprom’s statement is likely to escalate tensions between Europe and Russia, the agency warned.
Remember that by the end of 2022, Russia’s share of gas in Europe could be the lowest in 20 years. Russia can only meet EU gas needs by 20%, experts say.
It was also reported that Gazprom reduced exports by almost a third. In five and a half months, Russia has exported less than 65 billion cubic meters of gas.
