Banknotes in the denomination of 500 hryvnia are the most in circulation. However, the number of 1000 Hryvnia banknotes increased by 47%.
The most banknotes in circulation in Ukraine are 500 hryvnia banknotes. However, the number of 1000 hryvnia banknotes increased by almost 50% in 2024. The NBU reported this.
It was noted that the dynamics of the volume of banknotes in circulation for 2024 indicates a continued demand for banknotes in denominations of 1,000 hryvnia, which is one of the consequences of a full-scale invasion, because because of the war, prefer people are the higher denominations. of bills to store savings.
In 2024, the amount of cash in circulation in Ukraine increased by 7.6% (or by UAH 58.0 billion) and on January 1, 2025 reached UAH 822.4 billion.
Last year, the growth rate of cash in circulation remained moderate and was at the level of 2023, the NBU said.
In cash circulation there are 2.6 billion banknotes totaling 814.3 billion hryvnias, as well as 14.8 billion coins (excluding commemorative and investment coins) worth 7.96 billion hryvnias.
This year, every single resident of Ukraine at the beginning of this year had 63 banknotes and 186 payment changes and negotiable instruments.
The largest number of 500 hryvnia banknotes in circulation is 710.2 million for 355.1 million hryvnia. However, the number of 1,000 Hryvnia banknotes increased by 47%, to 354 million of 354 million Hryvnia.
The largest volume reduction occurred in banknotes with a face value of 200 hryvnia, the number of which in circulation last year decreased by 24.5% (mainly, due to their active replacement with banknotes with a value of face of 1,000 hryvnia and the beginning of the gradual removal of old samples of this denomination from circulation).
As for coins, the highest growth rate in 2024 will be seen in coins with denominations of 5 and 10 hryvnia. Their number in circulation increased by 27% and 33% compared to the beginning of 2024. This is explained by the fact that the NBU gradually withdrew banknotes in denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 hryvnias from circulation, replacing them with coins.
We remind you that from November 1, 2024, the National Bank began to gradually replace the 50 and 200 hryvnia banknotes from 2003-2007 with banknotes of the modern generation.
Earlier, the National Bank of Ukraine began withdrawing the old-style 500 hryvnia banknote from circulation. This applies to banknotes from 2003-2007.
