The EU is investigating whether Elon Musk’s social network algorithms are being used to promote specific political figures.
The European Union has pledged to speed up its investigation into Elon Musk’s social platform X over suspected violations of the Digital Services Act. Bloomberg reported this on Wednesday, January 8.
This underscores the European Commission’s growing attention to X, which has become a platform for Musk’s right-wing political statements, the newspaper notes.
The EU is investigating whether X’s algorithms are being used to promote specific political figures, such as Alice Weidel, the leader of the German far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
Musk has openly supported Weidel and plans to broadcast live with him on X. The European Commission is investigating whether such algorithmic support complies with platform neutrality and content moderation requirements under the law.
The investigation into Platform X began in 2023, shortly after the Digital Services Act (DSA) came into force, regulating content moderation and combating illegal and harmful content on the Internet.
The spotlight on Social Media X has intensified as Musk has become a powerful figure in global politics, using his platform to support right-wing candidates and causes.
Violation of the DSA can result in fines of up to 6% of X’s worldwide annual revenue.
Let’s remember that the previous French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot called on the European Commission to take tougher action against Musk.
President Vladimir Zelensky commented on the behavior of the American billionaire and said that Ukraine will focus on strengthening its air defense, and not on emotions.
