Russian gas transit has been suspended in the interest of national security. Ukraine informed international partners about it.
The transit of Russian natural gas through Ukraine has been halted. The Ministry of Energy announced this on Wednesday, January 1.
“At 07:00, in the interest of national security, the transportation of Russian natural gas on the territory of Ukraine was stopped in Ukraine, in accordance with the established procedure, international partners were informed about it,” the message said.
It is indicated that now Ukraine’s gas transportation system operates in the absence of Russian gas transit. Its infrastructure is prepared in advance to operate in zero transit mode and provide reliable gas supply to Ukrainian consumers.
“We have stopped the transit of Russian gas, it is a historic event that Russia has lost markets, it will suffer financial losses that Europe has decided to abandon Russian gas and the European Repower initiative The EU assumed what Ukraine did today, said Energy Minister German Galushchenko.
In this regard, the Russian Gazprom acknowledged the cessation of gas transit through Ukraine. The relevant agreement expired on January 1, 2025.
“Due to the repeated and clearly stated refusal of the Ukrainian side to renew this agreement, Gazprom has been deprived of the technical and legal opportunity to supply gas for transit on the territory of Ukraine from January 1, 2025. From 8:00 Moscow time, the supply of Russian gas for its transportation on the territory of Ukraine was not fulfilled “, noted the Russian gas monopolist.
The previous day, the EU announced its readiness to stop the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine. The European Commission has ensured that the European infrastructure is flexible enough to ensure gas supply via alternative routes to Central and Eastern Europe.
