The Novoshakhtinsky plant was launched in 2009, and now it has stopped production for the third time since the beginning of the year.

Russia’s largest petroleum products processing plant in the south, Novoshakhtinsky, has stopped major oil refining facilities. This was reported by Reuters, citing industry sources.

The only plant in the Rostov region, with a capacity of 5.6 million tons of oil per year, was attacked by Ukrainian drones on the night of December 19, resulting in a fire at the plant.

The AVT-2.5-2 unit with a capacity of 7.14 thousand tons per day, which accounts for 50% of the plant’s capacity, was attacked. He had to be restrained, sources said.

According to the interlocutors of the agency, an oil product tank caught fire, and the second main processing unit with a similar capacity – 7.14 thousand tons per day – was stopped.

The first major refinery built from scratch in Russia in 30 years, the Novoshakhtinsky plant was launched in 2009, and has now stopped production for the third time since the beginning of the year.

The first drone attack happened in March, and the second in June. As a result, output volumes at the refinery fell sharply: in January-October, it processed 2.7 million tons of oil compared to 4.8 million tons last year.

Overall, in January-December, Russian refineries lost 41.1 million tons, or 13% of capacity due to downtime caused by UAV strikes and repair difficulties due to Western supply sanctions of technology in Russia. The amount of downtime was 14%, or 5.2 million tons, higher than last year.

In January-May, Russian refineries reduced the production of gasoline by almost 20% and diesel fuel by 11%, after which the authorities decided to classify the statistics. At the end of May, the Ministry of Energy stopped providing Rosstat with operational data on fuel production.

We previously wrote that a massive fire broke out at an oil refinery in Novoshakhtinsk. Eyewitnesses wrote about a large number of drones, as well as a possible missile strike.

Later, the Center explained the importance of defeating this refinery.
