During the eight months of 2024, steel production in Ukraine increased by 30.7% in annual terms to 5.27 million tons.
Ukraine rose from 21st to 20th place in the ranking of 71 countries, the largest steel producer. This was reported by the press service Ukrmetallurgprom on Tuesday, September 24th.

Based on pre-war 2021 results, Ukraine is ranked 14th in the world in terms of steel production. By 2022 it had dropped to 25th place.
World steel production during this period was 1.25 billion tons, which is 1.54% lower than the January-August 2023 figure. Leading the way was China, where smelting dropped 3.3% compared to January-August last year to 691.41 million tons.
In the global ranking of pig iron producers, Ukraine retained the 13th position among 40 countries with a production volume of 4.73 million tons (+21.1% compared to January – August 2023).
Overall, since the beginning of 2024, metallurgical enterprises around the world have produced 937.28 million tons of pig iron (854.58 million tons by blast furnace and 82.70 million tons by direct reduction method), which is 2.28% lower than the January -August 2023 figure.
The first place here also belongs to China: 577.7 million tons, which is 4.3% less than the figure for the eight months of last year.
We reminded you earlier Metinvest calculated the necessary amount of steel to restore Ukraine. In order to restore the destroyed housing and social infrastructure in Ukraine as a result of the Russian invasion, approximately 3.5 million tons of steel are required.
