The rain has delayed the onion harvest and may also lead to a decline in the quality of the crop left in the field.
Onion prices have started to rise in price on the Ukrainian market since the beginning of this week. The main reason for the increase in the price of these products is the heavy rains observed in the southern region of the country. This was reported by the analysts of the EastFruit project.
The corresponding weather conditions are forcing farmers to suspend harvesting, which ultimately leads to a reduction in market supply and an increase in onion prices.
Today, Ukrainian farmers declared prices for onions in the range of 10-15 UAH/kg, which is on average 16% more expensive than at the end of the last working week.
So, experts believe that the reason for this price trend is the increase in demand for these products from wholesale companies. At the same time, due to the rainy season, the supply of onions in the southern region was slightly reduced, which also supported the prices.
In addition to the fact that the rain has suspended the onion harvest, it can also lead to a decrease in the quality of the products left in the field. Analysts also reported that farmers preferred to store most of the good quality onions, which now sell in small quantities.
Meanwhile, according to the daily monitoring of the project, the average price of onions in Ukraine today actually corresponds to last year’s level.
