Due to the Russian war in Ukraine, the Austrian company Wien Energie GmbH plans to eliminate dependence on Russian gas by 2025.
Austrian company Wien Energie GmbH said that starting next year, for the first time in decades, it will no longer need Russian fuel. Bloomberg reported this on Friday, September 13.
The company, which provides energy to two million people in and around the Austrian capital, now has access to 10 terawatt-hours of alternative sources, equivalent to around 12% of national consumption, from North Africa and other global liquefied natural gas suppliers.
“For the security of supply, due to the war of aggression carried out by Russia, independence from Russian gas is very important in 2025, all households, as well as commercial customers and power plants, will run on non-Russian gas,” said Peter. Hanke, head of the financial authority of Vienna.
Wien Energie will continue to buy gas through the Central European Gas Terminal for now, but in the future it will require traders to confirm that the fuel entering the city does not come from Russia. The company said it will use certificates of origin that are protected from counterfeiting and based on blockchain technology.
