For almost 60% of Ukrainian enterprises, the main problem is finding qualified workers.

The labor force in Ukraine is shrinking because of the war with Russia. Businesses are trying to fill critical labor shortages by hiring more women to fill traditionally male-dominated positions and by targeting teenagers, students and retirees. This was stated in a Reuters article published on Thursday, September 12.

“With millions of people, mostly women and children, fleeing war abroad and tens of thousands of men conscripted into the army, the jobs crisis could threaten economic growth and post-war recovery. war, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Economy among more than 3,000 companies, almost 60% of businesses said that their main problem was finding qualified workers,” the publication said.

The Director for Sustainable Development of the metallurgical holding Metinvest Tatyana Petruk, in a comment to the agency, said that there are about 4,000 open vacancies in the company, and the lack of personnel, in turn, affects production.

“We are not the only ones who feel the lack of personnel. It is felt by all the companies in the regions, including our contractors,” said Petruk.

Large companies surveyed by the agency said they are changing the way they recruit and do business, automating work, rotating existing staff and expanding job descriptions, rehiring retirees and offers more benefits, especially to younger workers.

Thus, the Silpo company is increasingly recruiting women for other positions where men previously had an advantage, including loaders, meat processors, packers and security guards. The company also employs six women as truck drivers.

The proportion of female employees increases in industries such as steel production. According to Petruk, female employees make up about 30-35% of Metinvest’s workforce. The company also employs women in some underground jobs. In addition, Metinvest is increasingly cooperating with vocational colleges.

And mobile operator Vodafone has revamped its youth programme, giving around 50 teenagers in 12 cities the chance to get their first work experience.

It was previously reported that for almost a year now the labor market in Ukraine has been in a state of staff shortage. The situation has only worsened in recent months. At the same time, wages are rising because employers are not losing hope of finding employees.
