While Tesla still leads the EV sales segment year-to-date, BMW became the first luxury automaker to surpass Tesla in July.
German automaker BMW AG has for the first time surpassed American company Tesla in sales of electric vehicles in the European Union. Bloomberg wrote this on Thursday, August 22.
All-electric BMW sales in the EU rose by about a third in July to 14,869 units. Tesla deliveries fell 16% to 14,561 units.
While Tesla still leads electric vehicle sales year-to-date, BMW became the first luxury car maker to surpass Tesla in July.
European car buyers registered a total of 139,300 new electric vehicles last month, down about 6% from July 2023.
Demand for electric cars is falling in Europe after countries such as Germany and Sweden removed or reduced subsidies, forcing manufacturers to abandon their EV ambitions.
However, BMW bucked the trend thanks to continued demand for electric vehicles, including the i4 and iX1.
Recall that Tesla sales fell for the first time in four years. The most recent sales decline occurred in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced Tesla to halt production.
Tesla has also reportedly recalled 3,878 Cybertrucks due to a malfunction. Vehicles should replace the gas pedal cover, which can come loose and stick to the trim.
