EU officials consider this approach the best response to Trump’s promise to impose punitive tariffs on European goods.
The European Union is preparing a two-step trade strategy with the United States if President Donald Trump wins the election. This was reported by the Financial Times newspaper.
The EU plans to accept the demands of the new US government administration, but the EU will be ready to step up its response if the US continues to raise tariffs on various goods.

EU officials believe a carrot-and-stick approach would provide the best response to Trump’s promise of a minimum tariff of 10%, which they estimate could reduce EU exports by an estimated 150 billion euros annually.
Negotiators plan to approach Trump’s team, if he wins the election in November, before he officially becomes president, to discuss which American goods the EU can buy in large quantities.
If negotiations to improve trade relations do not go ahead and Trump imposes higher tariffs, the European Commission’s trade department will be forced to draw up lists of imported goods on which tariffs 50% or more will be imposed.
“We have to show that we are building an alliance with the United States, and not creating problems for the United States to put aside all fears,” said a senior EU official.
Let’s remember that Trump’s adviser previously said that Eastern European NATO countries should not expect much from the United States, but should spend 10% of GDP on defense.
