Azerbaijan is trying to be “cautious” because it has been accused of re-exporting Russian gas in the past.
Ukraine and the European Union have asked Azerbaijan to supply natural gas to Europe through Ukraine after the current contract with Russia expires at the end of 2024. This was stated by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, writes Bloomberg.
According to him, negotiations on this issue are currently ongoing in Ukraine and the EU, as well as in Russia, and all parties are interested in the continuation of gas supplies on the Ukrainian route.
“We will help if we can… I think this agreement can be extended,” Aliyev said.
According to the Azerbaijani leader, some European countries like Austria and Slovakia will face serious problems if the gas transit to Ukraine stops, because they will have to pay “hundreds and hundreds of millions” more to buy gas from other countries.
Aliyev also noted that Azerbaijan is trying to be “cautious” because it was “falsely accused of re-exporting Russian gas” in the past. At the same time, he noted that gas production in his country will increase due to new and existing projects in the Caspian Sea.
We remind you that the EU proposed that Ukraine keep gas transit on the country’s territory after the expiration of the contract with Russia, but pump gas from Azerbaijan. Negotiations with Ukraine, the EU and Russia are currently ongoing.
