In June, the import situation may be more difficult due to warmer weather and planned maintenance at nuclear power plants.
In 2024, Ukraine will be forced to spend $800 million on electricity imports. The reason is a shortage in the energy system after the Russian missile attack on the energy sector. The Deputy head of the National Bank of Ukraine Sergei Nikolaychuk announced this at a briefing, reports Ekonomicheskaya Pravda.
“If we talk about imports, in April we imported 0.3 GW, in May – 0.6 GW in terms of value, these are not very significant amounts that have no definite impact on foreign exchange market. We expect that electricity imports will cost us about $800 million this year,” said Nikolaychuk.
According to him, the import situation may be more difficult in June due to warmer weather and planned repairs to nuclear power plants.
“This problem should be partially compensated in the coming months by extending the permission from the European network of system operators to transmit electricity on a commercial basis,” said Nikolaychuk.
In the past, it seems that electricity imports from EU countries to Ukraine have actually reached a physical maximum.
We remind you that as a result of Russian attacks, Ukraine lost 8 GW of capacity. Thermal generation was almost destroyed, and hydroelectric power stations were also damaged. In addition, AEs undergo summer repairs.
