Bulgaria imported fuel for nuclear power plants from outside Russia for the first time

Before the war in Ukraine, Bulgaria was almost entirely dependent on Russian energy supplies, but has since diversified.

The Bulgarian nuclear power plant Kozloduy on Monday, June 10, started using nuclear fuel produced by the American company Westinghouse in one of its reactors. This was reported by AFP.

The Kozloduy nuclear power plant on the Danube River provides more than a third of Bulgaria’s electricity generation and has until now relied on Russian fuel for its two 1,000-megawatt reactors.

The oldest reactor, Unit 5, built in 1987, was connected to the national grid on the morning of June 10 after being loaded with Westinghouse fuel.

The second reactor of the nuclear power plant should be supplied with fuel from the French company Framatome. In addition, by the 2030s, the nuclear plant should have two American-made nuclear reactors.

Before Russia’s all-out war in Ukraine, Bulgaria was almost entirely dependent on Russian energy supplies, but has since diversified by signing deals to supply nuclear fuel from Westinghouse and Framatome .

Let’s remember that in March the nuclear fuel was delivered to the American company Westinghouse for two power units of the Khmelnytsky Nuclear Power Plant.

Ukraine plans to build a plant for the production of fuel assemblies (FA) to supply nuclear power plants with fuel.
