On Sunday, John Oliver said housing is “what a 16-year-old TikTok millionaire can do and you can’t do.”
“Last Week Tonight” was led by the host with the goal of raising the rent and some of the greedy habits behind them.
He noted that the average monthly rent is at an all-time high and there is no country in the country where a worker on a minimum wage can rent a “modest 2-bedroom house”.
The landlords who accused the “market rate” of raising the rent did not get a permit from Oliver.
He showed a clip of Dave Ramsey, a personal financial figure, convincing a landlord that he had committed a crime that raising rents to market prices “doesn’t make me a bad Christian.”
“I will not evict a person from that house if he can no longer do it. The market did it, ”Ramsey told The Ramsey Show.
“Of course, not evicting someone from your home would not be a bad Christian,” Oliver said. «It is written in the Blessed: ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit’. Because of them the kingdom of heaven. Mad the poor with money. Because of them the kingdom of the landowners. Vazaaaaaa !! ‘”
Then came footage showing Bob Nichols of Monarch Investment and Management Group being hit by the “Unprecedented Opportunity” “Click Rent”. “Where are people going? “They’re not going anywhere,” he said.
Oliver accused the company of treating people like Panini. See what he means:
