The project strengthens Ferrexpo’s position as a producer of iron ore pellets and enables cleaner and more efficient steel production worldwide, the company said.

The Poltava Mining and Processing Plant has launched a new technological complex for press filtration for the production of pellets. Investments in the project reached $80 million, reported Ferrexpo, which owns the plant.

The complex, built on equipment from world leaders Metso, Atlas Copco and Eirich, will be used in the production process as a substitute for vacuum filtration for dewatering fine grains.

“The introduction of new production technology made it possible to reduce the use of bentonite by 55% and eliminate the consumption of expensive dehydrators. Press filtration also provided better control of the moisture content of the iron ore concentrate, reducing it at 9.7%, while in lines with vacuum filters this figure is 10.1%. This has a positive effect on the characteristics of the final product,” said Ferrexpo.

The company added that the new technology will also reduce natural gas consumption by 3%, which, in addition to savings, will lead to a reduction in carbon emissions. It will also increase the strength of the finished iron ore pellets and increase their production by 3%.

“By implementing projects like this during the war, Ferrexpo confirms its commitment to innovation and efficiency, putting sustainability and minimizing its impact on the environment at the forefront. This project not only strengthens Ferrexpo’s position as a leader in the production of high-quality iron ore pellets, but also an important element to ensure cleaner and more efficient steel production at the global level,” commented the Chairman of the Board of the Poltava Mining and Processing Plant, Viktor Lotous , with the launch of the new line.

Ferrexpo said that currently only the first and second technological lines in the pellet production shop are connected to the press filtration complex. They plan to connect two more lines by the end of this year.

Earlier it was reported that the Swiss mining company Ferrexpo AG in the first quarter of the year will pay an annual bonus in the amount of the average monthly income to the employees of its enterprises in Ukraine. We are talking about the Poltava Mining and Processing Plant, the Eristovsky Mining and Processing Plant and the Bilanovsky Mining and Processing Plant.
