“We stopped work for 20 days in January 2024, now the plant in Balti stopped again, as well as the Danube Oil plant in Giurgiulesti. We could not buy enough sunflower seeds on the Moldovan market. In January 2024, we tried get the right to import seeds from Ukraine, but the specialized commission of the Ministry of Agriculture did not give us a license,” said plant director Stela Ostrovetsky.
According to him, the business can process more than 1,000 tons of sunflower seeds per day; to continue functioning, large volumes are needed, which they cannot buy in Moldova.
“According to our estimates, only about 100 thousand tons of sunflower seeds are left in the market, there are farmers who do not want to sell now at the market price, but want to keep the seeds, hoping that the price will increase in the summer, ” added Ostrowiecki.
At the same time, the association The Power of Farmers claims that there are many sunflowers on the Moldovan market, and accuses processors of not wanting to offer real prices and trying to dictate terms.
