The authors of the bill note that Ukrainian companies are already developing projects for the production of biomethane.
The Verkhovna Rada adopted the law No. 9456 On amendments to the Customs Code of Ukraine on customs clearance of biomethane. In the second reading, the corresponding draft law was supported by 297 deputies. This was announced by the first deputy head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Tax and Customs Policy, the people’s representative from the faction Voice Yaroslav Zheleznyak on his Telegram channel on Wednesday, March 20.
The law should regulate customs control and customs clearance of biomethane exported abroad through gas pipelines.
Ukrainian companies are already working on projects for biomethane production and injection into gas networks. More than 10 agricultural holdings are considering the possibility of entering the biomethane market and are planning to build at least 30 biomethane plants with a total production capacity of more than 220 million cubic meters. m per year.
According to the Bioenergy Association, there are 77 biogas plants operating in Ukraine. They produce up to 260 million cubic meters of fuel per year, which can be processed into about 150 million cubic meters of biomethane. By 2030, the total production of biomethane in Ukraine may reach 1 billion cubic meters. m per year.
Biomethane can be used to replace natural gas, produce thermal energy and electrical energy as fuel for transportation, raw materials for the chemical industry, and contribute to the diversification of energy sources, accelerating the transition to clean energy, and attracting investment.
“Today, there is an issue of unregulated customs clearance of biomethane; in order to develop the industry, it is necessary to remove… the gap at the legislative level. For Ukraine, opening export opportunities means attracting of new investments in the energy and agricultural sector of the economy,” note the authors of the project law.
As we have already written, for the first time in history Ukrgasvydobuvannya production from new wells exceeds one billion cubic meters per year.
In addition, Ukrainian authorities plan to begin construction of four new nuclear reactors this summer or fall.
