The European Court has ordered the lifting of sanctions against Nikita Mazepin, the son of Russian tycoon Dmitry Mazepin.
The Court of General Jurisdiction of the European Union reversed the decision to include Nikita Mazepin, a former Formula 1 driver and son of Russian oligarch Dmitry Mazepin, on the sanctions list. It was reported on the court’s website on Wednesday, March 20.
“A family connection with his father, the Russian businessman Dmitry Mazepin, is not enough to consider that he is connected to his father by common interests and, therefore, for him to remain on these lists,” said the court decision.
In March 2022, Nikita Mazepin was included in the list of people subject to EU restrictive measures in response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
His inclusion on this list is based on his connection with his father, businessman Dmitry Mazepin, who is involved in economic sectors that provide a large source of income for the Russian government. Mazepin Sr. is the main sponsor of his son’s activities as a driver for the Haas Formula One team through companies associated with him.
Nikita Mazepin appealed to the EU Court to lift the sanctions. The court ruled that the man’s family ties to his father were not sufficient grounds to consider him connected to Mazepin Sr. through common interests.
Regarding his father’s sponsorship of Nikita Mazepin, the court emphasized that since March 2022, Mazepin Jr. has not been a Haas team driver.
We remind you that earlier the European Union did not include Yandex co-founder Arkady Volozh from the list of sanctions. The EU Court rejected the appeal of Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, he will remain on the sanctions list.
