In Ukraine, this year there will be an open state trial of digital currency – e-hryvnia. Banks, non-bank financial institutions and their clients can join the process. This was reported by the press service of the National Bank of Ukraine on Wednesday, March 6.
The NBU conducted the first test of e-hryvnia in 2018. It took place in a closed environment and provided for the implementation of the Electronic Hryvnia platform, the release of a limited amount of digital hryvnia in circulation and the test of operations with e -hryvnia exclusively by NBU employees and some companies participating in the project.
However, the second phase, which will start in the second half of 2024, will be opened. This means that banks, non-bank financial institutions and their clients who want to test the Hryvnia functionality will be able to participate.
All payment transactions with e-hryvnia during the trial period will take place on a single technological platform, the operator of which is the National Bank
During the test, the National Bank plans to evaluate the effectiveness of the chosen technological platform and the ease of use of e-hryvnia for payment transactions, its advantages in practice, which will help in making a decision on being its large-scale release is possible in Ukraine.
The NBU emphasized that in any case, e-hryvnia will not replace the cash or non-cash form of the hryvnia, but will be their addition. Even if e-hryvnia is accepted, users can choose without restriction which form of hryvnia (cash or non-cash, including e-hryvnia) to pay.
We remind you that on September 8, 2021, the Rada allowed the cryptocurrency market and the digital hryvnia. E-hryvnia is an electronic form of Ukrainian currency. The use of e-hryvnia, according to the NBU, should be convenient and accessible to all segments of the population, businesses, government agencies, etc.
In November 2022, the National Bank presented a draft concept of a digital hryvnia, designed to perform all the functions of money and complement the cash and non-cash forms of the hryvnia.
