The ban will apply to agricultural products and livestock that remain in the country.
The Seimas of Latvia on Thursday, February 22, in two readings adopted a resolution banning the import of agricultural products of Russia and Belarus until July 2025. This is reported by LSM.
The Latvian Seimas rejected the initial proposal of opposition deputies to ban the supply of agricultural and processed products from Russia and Belarus from February 24 this year. In contrast, the parliament approved an alternative bill prepared by the Latvian Ministry of Agriculture and supported by the parliamentary budget commission. 69 representatives voted for this document, and only nine opposed it.
The import ban will apply to agricultural and livestock products that remain in Latvia and are not sent to other European Union member states, and will be in effect until July 2025.
The government must, within 14 days from the date of entry into force of the law, establish in regulations a list of specific products that are prohibited to import into Latvia.
Latvia has become the first EU country to introduce restrictions on the import of agricultural products from the Russian Federation and Belarus.
Let’s recall that the Constitutional Court of Latvia recognized as constitutional the criteria of the immigration law that obliges Russian citizens to pass the Latvian language test and indicate the source of income in order to obtain a permanent residence permit in the EU.
