In January, the population of Ukraine sold cash and non-cash money to commercial banks in the amount of $1.282 billion (equivalent) and bought $2.386 billion. Net foreign currency purchases totaled $1.103 billion. This is confirmed by data from the National Bank on Friday, February 2.
The volume of purchases increased by 7.5% compared to December 2023. At the end of January, Ukrainians bought a record amount of currency for 11 years – in November 2012, the figure reached $1.523 billion.
This result in January was ensured by the cash currency segment, where its net purchase increased to $885.2 million from $807.5 million in December and $375-380 million in November-October, while the balance of non-cash purchases and sales that currency remained at the level of the previous month – $218.0 million
As you know, foreign currency remains the main means of saving for Ukrainians. The other day, the National Bank reported an increase in the amount of cash currency outside banks by $11.8 billion by 2023 – up to $120 billion. This volume includes cash money from both households and businesses.
It was also noted that Ukrainian banks have imported a record amount of foreign currency since 2014. In December alone, $1.33 billion of foreign cash was brought into the country.
