The protest included blocking all border crossings between Poland and Ukraine, as well as roads and highways across the country.
Polish farmers have announced a new nationwide strike. It will begin on February 9 and last until March 10. This was announced yesterday by the independent farmers’ union Solidarity, which initiated the blockade.
“Our patience has run out. The position of Brussels on the last day of January 2024 is unacceptable for our entire agricultural community,” the statement said.
The trade union noted that the passivity of the Polish authorities, declarations of cooperation with the European Commission, statements of compliance with all EC decisions on the import of agricultural products and food products from Ukraine has “no choice but to declare a general strike.”
The protest included blocking all border crossings between Poland and Ukraine, as well as roads and highways across the country.
We remind you that on December 23, Polish farmers suspended protests at the Ukrainian border for negotiations with the new government. Then they asked for a subsidy for the purchase of corn, to keep the tax at the current year’s level and to continue lending liquidity.
And on January 31, the European Commission proposed the extension of visa-free economic travel with Ukraine for another year. At the same time, Brussels plans to create a “strengthened safety net” to protect the interests of European farmers.
