Global sales of fully electric and hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) grow 31% in 2023, up from 60% growth in 2022.
The growth rate of electric car sales in 2023 has slowed down compared to 2022. This is confirmed by data from the research company Rho Motion, writes Reuters.
Global sales of fully electric and hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) will grow by 31% in 2023, up from 60% growth in 2022, but Rho Motion data manager Charles Lester believes this is an expected result.
Lester noted that last year’s global EV sales were more in line with Rho Motion’s 30% forecast, and the company forecasts global EV sales growth of 25% to 30% by 2024.
Rho Motion said sales reached a monthly record of 1.5 million units last December.
Fully electric or battery electric vehicles (BEVs) will account for 9.5 million of the 13.6 million EVs sold worldwide by 2023, with the rest coming from PHEVs.
BEV sales grew 50% in the US and Canada and 27% and 15% in Europe and China, respectively. Rho Motion says only 8% of BEV sales in Europe come from the small car segment, although it predicts changes to smaller models such as Stellantis’ Citroën eC3 due to go on sale this year.
After years of accelerating growth, some automakers fear sales of electric vehicles in Europe and elsewhere may now slow as drivers wait for better, smaller and cheaper ones. model expected to be two to three years away.
The demand for electric vehicles has also increased in Ukraine. At the beginning of the year, the demand for new cars in Ukraine increased by 60%, and for used cars by 40%.
