During the mass invasion, Russia committed more than 2.5 thousand crimes against the environment in Ukraine.

The total damage to the Ukrainian environment due to the Russian invasion amounted to more than 2 trillion hryvnias (55.6 billion euros). Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal announced this while speaking at the United for Justice international forum. United for Nature.

“Every day Russia destroys our people, our businesses and infrastructure, our environment, our air, lands, forests and water bodies. The total environmental damage as a result of Russia’s aggression now reaches in more than 2 trillion hryvnias or 55.6 billion euros,” he said head of government.

According to Shmygal, compensation for this damage should come from confiscated Russian properties. “Then the principle “Russia will pay” will be implemented,” added the prime minister.

According to the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Ruslan Strelets, during the full-scale invasion, the Russian Federation committed more than 2.5 thousand crimes against the environment in Ukraine. These are the only ones we recorded. After the de-occupation of populated areas, this number will increase. Thus, according to experts from the UNEP mission, restoring the environment in the south alone will cost at least $59 million.

Prosecutor General Andrei Kostin said that Ukraine was the first in the history of mankind to investigate crimes against the environment as military.

Within the framework of the Forum, it is planned to start a large-scale dialogue to create a Global Platform for the assessment of environmental damage as a result of wars. The said platform was announced by President Vladimir Zelensky. The initiative is reflected in paragraph 8 of the Ukrainian Peace Formula.

In addition, Ukraine and its partners plan to sign several documents on cooperation in the leisure sector and show their progress in developing their own climate architecture.

Let’s recall that on the night of June 6, Russian troops blew up the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, which caused widespread flooding in the territories of the Kherson region and caused great environmental, economic and humanitarian damage to Ukraine.

As a result of the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, Ukraine suffered damages of almost $14 billion.
