In the past, cargo from Ukraine arrived only by road transport, which in terms of transport volume could not be compared with rail transport.
The port of Riga received and released a test train with Ukrainian grain products delivered by a subsidiary of Latvian Railways – SIA LDZ CARGO. Latvian carrier Latvijas dzelzceļš reported this on October 12.

It was found that 1,423 tons of rapeseed in 54 containers arrived from Ukraine. Agricultural products arrive at the Kaunas intermodal railway terminal, where they are loaded onto SIA LDZ CARGO platforms to continue their journey to Riga.
“Since the beginning of the massive war, the port terminals of Riga have been actively working on the transportation of Ukrainian grain products, but until now they arrived at the port by road transport, which in terms of the volume of transport cannot be compared to rail transport,” emphasized Ansis Zeltins, manager of the Free Port of Riga.
Receiving grain in containers is a new experience for the port of Riga, but Rīgas Universālais Terminals has all the necessary technology and warehouses for cargo handling.
The containers were sent from Ukraine on September 25, on October 8 they were loaded on the platforms of SIA LDZ CARGO in Kaunas, and on October 11 they arrived at the port of Riga and unloading began.
Rail transportation is organized by SIA LDZ CARGO and SIA LTG Cargo Ukraine under a cooperation agreement concluded in November 2022.
Earlier it was reported that Lithuania agreed on a corridor for the transit of Ukrainian grain to the Baltic port.
